Thanks for sharing this powerful outlet, Edie. Journaling has played such an integral role in my journey of grief. It was and still is the “safest space” to really acknowledge the depth of loss I feel. This in turn allows for healing, reflection, and continued love. Thanks for sharing your journey so openly! Your honesty is inspiring and brave. ❤️

Kasey! Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. I am glad writing is helping you. What you say about it allowing for "healing, reflection and continued love" really resonates with me. I find a lot of comfort being "back" with my mom. Thanks for putting that into words. Take care and let's both keep writing!

This is so valuable, Edie! Getting it out is indeed so helpful! I get a little stuck when I try to write about personal things on my Substack, but your vulnerability and stories inspire me! Thanks for another great (and relatable!) post. 💛

Thanks for the inspiration, I am not a writer, (besides scientific research papers) but did have a ski racing journal. I look back at it and truly believe that it delineated the lofty goals I had and gave me a way to get there and be on the team with you.

I am reading your column because my mother dealt with Alzheimer’s too. I love your humorous style of reporting the crazy things that caregivers or loved ones experience while being a caregiver. I was so fortunate to be able to laugh about it than worry or regret that my mom would never be the same. She was healthy otherwise, happy and at peace with it, and so was her care team.

I can think back on that time and remember the amazing moments when she became clear for a moment amongst the fog. I felt so fortunate to be there to experience the those moments. A journal would have been helpful to work through the tough times.

Thanks for reading Heidi AND for sharing your thoughts on your mom. It reminded me of those rare and miraculous moments of clarity that happen out of the blue. Sounds like your mom had a great care team as well as a fab daughter!

Oh my gosh, Edie I love this. Thank you for offering your perspective and encouragement to folks to write their stories. It's so powerful! But like you said, people talk down to themselves when they say they're a bad writer or "their view isn't unique.." who cares!? Maybe that person won't try to pitch their book to a literary agent, but just writing things down is so healing.
